The Large Red Whale Journal

The Red Whale Journal

The Red Whale Journal is a recent re-imagining of an earlier work in my studio, transformed through the inspiration of a scrap of red leather whose contours suggested the shape of a whale. This intuitive discovery became the focal point of the design, as I carefully disassembled the original journal I had created years before and reworked its structure. The red leather whale was hand-sewn onto the new cover, giving the piece both presence and symbolic resonance as a guardian of depth, creativity, and endurance.

Inside, the journal contains a rich variety of high-quality papers selected to accommodate both writing and drawing. These include archival drawing sheets, Japanese Tomoe River paper renowned for its smooth surface and responsiveness to ink, and additional fine art papers chosen for durability and expressive potential. Together, they create a book that is versatile, tactile, and responsive to the diverse needs of its user.

For me, the making of books is a union of two enduring passions: the art of the book itself and the limitless possibilities of what is placed within its pages—words, images, reflections, and records of daily life. The Red Whale Journal embodies this philosophy, offering not only a finely crafted object but also a vessel for imagination, memory, and creative exploration.
